Don’t call it a buyout—call it a coordinated effort to curate a headcount reduction. McKinsey, the consulting company that legally has to be on your resume if you have an MBA, is offering UK employees nine months of pay if they agree to spend that time looking for a new workplace.

The offer targets staff who manage teams of consultants and associate partners, and includes access to the firm’s career coaching services. It’s also up for grabs in the US offices, but it’s not clear how many employees can accept it, or if the pay plan is the same, according to British newspaper the Times.

  • A spokesperson said, “A core part of our mission is helping people learn and grow into leaders, whether they stay at McKinsey or continue their careers elsewhere.”

  • Last year, the firm pushed back start dates for recent hires.

Consult with consultants: McKinsey and other consulting firms have been desperate to trim staff after pandemic-era hiring booms. Last year, the company said it would cut 1,400 jobs after its roster ballooned to over 45,000, compared with 28,000 in 2018.
