It’s true to say that an agency is only as good as the agents they employ. However, if you’re starting your search it's important that you know how to select a recruitment agency to work with, it is advisable that you stay closer to the agencies who specialise within your sector rather than a generalist agency, this is due to the fact that hiring companies (who use recruitment agencies) tend to prefer working with specialists recruiters as they provide valuable industry, candidate and market insights only available to those who work within a niche area daily.

However this is not to say that you should not be using a generalist agency, however you have to know what you're getting when working with a recruitment agency. It is suggested that you work with a small number of agencies niche or general who are looking to build and maintain a relationship with you

So, what do you need to do before sending your CV to your recruitment agency.

  1. Do a ‘top 10’ search of recruitment agencies in your sector/specialism

  2. Review their website for the type of jobs they list, most but not all should be within your specific sector

  3. Review the pedigree of their recruiters, by using LinkedIn (what is the average years of experience)

  4. Do they have client testimonials on their website, (you would hope that they do)

  5. Call and speak to a recruiter, (select a suitably experienced recruiter from LinkedIn) and measure their knowledge and their ability to help you with your search.

  6. if you have worked at a company with an internal HR and or recruitment team as them who they would recommend (this is also a nice way to rekindle part of your network)

Don't forget that external agency recruiters are here to make money, rarely are they satisfying a higher purpose, so when dealing with them, think as they would, be strategic and commercial and you may just get the best out of them.
